What chiropractic care costs in NYC
Most NYC chiropractors don't publish prices. On October 10, 2026, we found three that list fees on their own websites:
| Practice | First visit | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Rudin Chiropractic (Manhattan) | $190 | From $90 |
| Encore Chiropractic (Manhattan) | $150 | $75 |
| Brooklyn Chiropractic Care (Brooklyn) | $150 | $100 |
In this small sample, a first visit (exam and first adjustment) cost $150 to $190, and a follow-up $75 to $100 or more. That isn't a citywide average. Ask any practice for its per-visit price before booking, and compare it with any package it offers.
Insurance and HSA/FSA in New York
New York Insurance Law §3221(k)(11) requires group managed-care plans that cover doctor visits or major medical care to include chiropractic care. Plans can still set reasonable copays, deductibles and benefit limits, as long as those aren't stricter than for other providers treating the same conditions. Your plan's Summary of Benefits and Coverage shows how many visits it allows and whether out-of-network visits count.
The same rule reaches other policies. Every policy that covers physician office visits, or that is a managed care product with major medical coverage, must include chiropractic care, subject to reasonable limits (Insurance Law §3216(i)(21)(A)). Section 4303(y)(1) applies the same requirement to health service corporation and medical expense indemnity contracts. Most private employers' self-funded plans aren't subject to New York insurance mandates, including this one (U.S. Department of Labor), so check your plan documents or ask HR whether your plan is self-funded.
New York Medicaid covers chiropractic care only for enrollees under 21 (through its EPSDT benefit) and for people with chronic lower back pain, when medically necessary and on a referral from a physician or primary care clinic (state plan, 2021).
Among the three practices above, Rudin Chiropractic lists in-network plans (UnitedHealthcare-Oxford, Empire BCBS, Aetna and GHI). Encore Chiropractic doesn't accept insurance. Brooklyn Chiropractic Care is out of network but handles courtesy billing for out-of-network benefits.
HSA and FSA funds can usually pay for chiropractic care. IRS Publication 502 lists fees paid to a chiropractor for medical care as a medical expense.
How to check a chiropractor's license in New York
Chiropractors in New York must be licensed under Education Law Article 132. The state requires a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from a CCE-accredited program and national board exams (NYSED). To check a license:
- Go to the NYSED Office of the Professions online verification and choose the profession (chiropractic).
- Search by name: type at least three letters of the last name, then a space and the first name, with no comma. Or search by the six-digit license number.
- Check the registration status, and that the name matches the person who will treat you.
NYSED warns of scam calls from people pretending to be state staff. Don't give personal information to unsolicited callers.
How many visits to expect
There's no standard number. One chiropractic guideline describes a typical first trial of 6 to 12 visits over two to four weeks, then a check on progress, and those figures rest on expert opinion (Globe et al., 2016). Be cautious about long prepaid plans set at the first visit: we found no independent evidence that they improve results or save money. Our guide on how often you should see a chiropractor covers visit patterns, Medicare's maintenance rule and questions to ask before signing a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to have your neck adjusted?
Mild soreness, stiffness or headache are common and usually pass within 24 hours (NCCIH). Serious problems are very rare. A 2014 American Heart Association statement found that neck manipulation is associated with a rare type of stroke in younger people, but the evidence doesn't prove manipulation causes it. Ask about risks and alternatives. You can decline neck manipulation.
Know the American Stroke Association's B.E. F.A.S.T. warning signs: sudden loss of balance, sudden vision changes, face drooping, arm weakness, and speech that is slurred or hard to understand. If you notice any of them, call 911 right away, even if the symptoms go away, whether or not you've just had neck treatment.
Does Medicare cover chiropractors in New York?
Only for manual manipulation of the spine to correct a subluxation, and only while it counts as active treatment. Once a condition is stable, further visits are maintenance, which Medicare doesn't cover. Medicare's own summary is on its chiropractic services page.
Can a chiropractor prescribe medication?
No. New York law bars chiropractors from prescribing or dispensing drugs and from performing surgery. A medical doctor or osteopathic physician (DO) can prescribe.
Should I see a chiropractor, osteopath or physical therapist?
All three are trained in spinal manipulation. A DO is a licensed physician who can prescribe. A physical therapist evaluates and treats movement problems, and in New York an experienced PT can treat you without a referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days. Our guide has a side-by-side comparison, and you can also browse physical therapists in New York City.
Are prepaid chiropractic packages worth it?
We found no independent research showing that they lead to better results or cost less. Before you prepay, compare the package with the per-visit price, ask when progress will be reassessed, and ask whether unused visits are refunded.
When should I see a medical doctor first?
If back pain comes with new loss of bladder or bowel control or numbness in the groin or buttocks, go to an emergency room right away (Cleveland Clinic). Leg weakness or numbness that is getting worse also needs care right away. Contact a clinician promptly for back pain with unexplained fever, a history of cancer, pain after a severe blow or fall, or pain that wakes you at night (MedlinePlus).
